While on holidays, I was determined to get an amazing family portrait. I have all of the equipment, knowledge and skills to get an amazing shot right? WRONG!

I went out and got everyone a nice outfit that complimented each other, spruced everyone up (just like I tell all of my clients). Now we just needed to find the right spot (shouldn’t be hard in Hawaii) I had to be able to set up my camera somewhere, then set the automatic timer, then run to get in the photo.

I don’t need to go into too much detail of what an absolute circus that turned out to be…Strangers would then walk by and ask if they could help which was nice…but ….

poor little Emily has her entire body cut off, the composition is awful, the horizon is crooked…shall I go on??

Here is another example.

There are so many things in this photo that I would not have done, fix the girls shoulder straps, fix their hand placement, fix my hand, have husband tilt his head a bit towards me, include more of the kids body, etc…these are the details that I see through my camera that I know will make the difference in an amazing photo, or an amateur photo.

Trust me, the scene was so much better than this! I would also would never use my on camera flash like this but we took so long to get organized that it started getting too dark!

In the end, I have a memory and some nice shots of my family on this Hawaii trip 2012.

As for the large portrait above my couch as a feature in my family room…I will have to hire someone for that!

This is my favorite photo from the “session”. My husband took it.

Cut to Hawaii trip 2013 and I pre planned! I hired a local professional and did it right. I haven’t seen all of the images yet, but from the samples she sent me, I have already found a few that I love.  While the session I did alone last year are “acceptable”, there is a real difference when you have a professional behind the lens doing their thing. I just couldn’t do that for myself. I guess it’s the same things as maybe a  hairdresser doing their own hair cut, or maybe a massage therapist trying to get out a muscle knot, it just isn’t the same. Now I have images that are stunning that I can then plaster all over the walls of our home!

Welcome to the year 2013! More and more of you are demanding digital files, in fact a recent survey I created and sent out to my clients resulted in 52.27% of you wanting digital files so bad that it would be a deal breaker if the photographer didn’t offer them.

I am a huge advocate for printed images. I fear the art of print is going to be lost in this digital age. That being said though, I am always happy to browse through “friends” Facebook pages and blogs and see their images on their “walls” etc. Good news!

Baby Maddy is one of our first baby program graduates. Half way through the year, they moved to Ontario from B.C., but that didn’t stop them! We did our final 1 year session in January when they were back visiting their family. Orders will get drop shipped directly to their new home in Ontario and everyone is happy!
