A family in time – 2015

family legacy photography

** STORY FROM 2014 –

Recently, I had read about a photographer who photographed his wife and her sisters over a 25 year period. I thought this was amazing! It got my creative juices flowing, and I thought about a similar project I would like to try. I put it out there, and what I got was an amazing opportunity.

Over the next 10 years or so, I am planning on photographing this family’s children. They are a beautiful bunch of kids, ranging in age from 4 months to 9 years. I know this family personally from my children’s school and other activities my kids are in since these girls are the same age as my two girls.

What is really special about this family is not only their cuteness, but the life they are currently living.

Here is Mom, Darlene’s story:

Back in October of 2011, Darlene found a lump in her neck. After getting a biopsy done, she found out that she had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and would require 6 months of chemotherapy, starting right before Christmas. As if that wasn’t hard enough, her best friend suffered a massive stroke in Winnipeg on Christmas. She flew over in the middle of a treatment cycle and was back and forth until her friend passed away on the same day Darlene had to terminate a pregnancy due to having treatment.

Once chemo was completed, 8 weeks later they were pregnant! They were told this may never happen due to chemo. Unfortunately, her water broke at 28 weeks, most likely because she was still sick. Her son, Matthew spent 77 days in hospital. Not only 2 weeks after she got home she felt a lump, same place. Darlene knew what it was right away. So she began 6 weeks of chemo, high dose chemo before a stem cell transplant and a year recovery.

All along the way Darlene’s positive attitude and perseverance has been amazing to see!

Darlene mentioned she regretted not documenting herself through her illness. She also regretted not having updated family portraits. If anything happens she wants her babies to have these memories of us together. She is still fighting!

**UPDATE 2015

I missed the opportunity to photograph the kids on schedule this summer due to hectic schedules and life… but this family was always on my mind. Finally, this winter we booked the “family in time” session.  Darlene and the kids came to the studio for their current photos for my ongoing project. This year, I really wanted to focus on Darlene WITH the kids. I hope to be able to do this every year, but the recent some unfortunate news I am not sure if that will happen for certain. After being cancer free and clear for a little over a year, Darlene got some terrible news that her cancer is back with a vengeance and no cure. She is trying an experimental treatment that should buy her some time, but with no assurance for the future.  She is staying positive and fighting hard, and living life as we all should! Checking things off our bucket list, and enjoying each and every moment! NO ONE really knows how long they have to live…. I will continue to pray for them, and do everything I can to help capture all the memories. Another thing we should all be sure to do!

I am so grateful for this opportunity to help this family preserve some very special memories. They are such a strong and loving family and I wish them the very best of luck on the fight and in life. Thanks so much for opening up and sharing your story and allowing me into your life for this special time.
